Motherhood is a life-changing experience that reshapes how we connect with ourselves and others at every stage. With the beauty of this transformation often comes unexpected emotional shifts. Many moms find themselves face-to-face with old wounds; whether from childhood, past traumas, or even birth experiences that resurface in their motherhood journey.
Through my work with moms, I’ve witnessed how these layers of pain can show up in daily life. One powerful tool I use to help process and release these experiences is a brain-body therapy called Brainspotting.
What Is Brainspotting Therapy?
Brainspotting is a brain-body-based form of therapy that helps access the parts of the brain where trauma and emotional pain are stored. While talk therapy can be supportive, it sometimes feels repetitive or “stuck.” Brainspotting creates a pathway for processing those stuck emotions by identifying and focusing on a specific eye position, known as a brainspot.
Developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting allows clients to process deeply without having to retell every detail of painful experiences. This makes it especially helpful for moms who may feel exhausted by constantly talking through their stories.
Why Brainspotting Matters for Moms
Many moms carry unprocessed pain in their bodies without even realizing it. This often shows up as:
Chronic stress or body tension
Feeling overstimulated and irritable
Anxiety or panic attacks
Postpartum depression or sadness
Reactivity in relationships
Brainspotting helps moms connect with their bodies in a mindful, focused way, offering release from what feels too heavy to carry alone.
Brainspotting for Birth Trauma, Anxiety, and Motherhood Stress
Motherhood can bring up:
Birth trauma (difficult labor, NICU stays, or unexpected medical interventions)
Childhood wounds (such as the mother wound, attachment struggles, or neglect)
Daily burnout (overstimulation, guilt, and anxiety that feels overwhelming)
Brainspotting supports moms in gently processing these experiences so they no longer feel stuck in cycles of pain, shame, or self-blame.
What Happens in a Brainspotting Session?
In a typical Brainspotting session, I guide my clients to identify an issue or experience they’d like to process. Together, we find a brainspot, either through a pointer or fixed eye gaze that connects to that experience.
From there, the client focuses on the brainspot while I hold safe, attuned space and track their nervous system’s responses. The body begins to process what has been stuck, often leading to relief, release, and healing.
Benefits of Brainspotting for Moms
Many of the moms I work with share that Brainspotting helps them:
Feel calmer and less reactive
Reduce overstimulation and anxiety
Release body tension and stress
Heal from birth trauma and loss
Connect to their experiences with compassion instead of shame
Build patience, presence, and self-compassion in motherhood
